* Échelle québécoise and CEFR levels according to the MIFI correspondence table (November 29, 2024 version), which links TEF scores directly to these levels. NCLC thresholds and MIFI bands don’t line up, so one NCLC level can match two levels depending on the skill and your score. The level that counts is the one on your results certificate.
CECFQ does not handle immigration matters. This table is for information only: always check the current requirements on official websites (IRCC, MIFI). For immigration support, see our partners, including VF Immigration.

TEF exam: frequently asked questions
- Where can I take the TEF exam near Montreal?
At CECFQ, an accredited TEF centre in Longueuil, on Montreal’s South Shore. We administer the TEF Canada and TEFAQ exams, as well as TEF Études and TEF IRN.
- Do I need to take all four sections for TEFAQ?
Not necessarily. Depending on your Quebec program, TEFAQ can include 1 to 4 sections, and each section can be taken separately. For Canadian citizenship, listening and oral expression are enough. Check the exact requirement with MIFI or IRCC before you register.
- Which TEF results do IRCC and Quebec accept?
For Express Entry and other federal immigration programs, IRCC accepts only TEF Canada. For Canadian citizenship, IRCC also accepts TEFAQ and TEF IRN: you need B1 or higher in listening and speaking. Quebec’s PSTQ accepts TEF Canada, TEFAQ and other approved French tests, as long as your results are two years old or less on the date you apply.
- What’s the difference between the TEF and the TCF?
Both are accepted by IRCC and by Quebec’s immigration programs, and the choice often comes down to which exam dates and format work best for you. Read our TEF vs. TCF comparison for a closer look.
- TEF Canada or TEFAQ: which should I take if I may apply to both Quebec and federal immigration programs?
TEF Canada. Quebec’s PSTQ accepts TEF Canada as well as TEFAQ, while Express Entry accepts only TEF Canada. If you only need Quebec immigration or Canadian citizenship, TEFAQ with just the sections your program requires may be enough.
- Can I prepare for the TEF with CECFQ and take the exam here too?
Yes. Start with Ev@lang and a diagnostic with an examiner, follow a TEF preparation plan, then sit the exam at our Longueuil centre once dates are confirmed. For a study plan, read our TEF Canada preparation guide.
